18.1 Results are Final!!
Week 1 is in the books and boy what a week! We had 43 people complete workout 18.1 and easily a quarter of y'all did the WOD twice to try and better your score.. and I think everyone that had a do-over did better so that's a huge point of pride to take away from week 1!
The CrossFit Open is a worldwide, online CrossFit competition hosted by CrossFit Headquarters and it's designed as the first test to entry for the annual CrossFit Games, the Super Bowl of CrossFit competitions that's held each summer in Carson, California. In 2017 over 300,000 people participated in the online competition! Over 5 weeks, CrossFit HQ announces a mystery workout each Thursday and participants have until Monday at close of business to complete the workout. We follow the 5 weeks of workouts alongside HQ by doing an in-house Intramural Open whereas athletes are drafted onto teams to compete against one another, earning team points by placing in the top 3 for their division, performing the workout each week and by coming together to show team spirit and good sportsmanship.
I'd like to take a moment to thank our Gold level sponsor, Dr. Ross Leago at Fairway Chiropractic in Alvin for his generous sponsorship. Just before the Open I sat down for lunch with Dr. Leago at Gordon St. Tavern to get to know the man and I was pleased to hear how much his passion for helping people aligned with what we do daily in our CrossFit gym. There's a level of knowledge and desire to help people that rivals our own so I was very happy to have Fairway Chiropractic on board as a sponsor.
Dr. Leago has been serving the Alvin community since April of 2007 and his staff is one of the friendliest you'll find at any business. I always enjoy walking through their doors so if you're in need of Chiropractic services, please consider their facility.. oh, and those massage chairs while you wait! Visit them online at http://www.myfairwaychiropractic.com/ or call 281-331-5000 to schedule an appointment today! Whether you have an injury, need routine maintenance or even need care for your child, their great staff can help diagnose and treat your symptoms!
Back to the Open...
Open workout 18.1 (as in 2018, workout 1) was a 20 minute AMRAP (As Many Reps As Possible) meaning the athlete cycles through the 3 movements below as many times as possible in 20 minutes! The movements were:
8 x Toes to Bar
10 x Dumbbell Hang Clean & Jerks
Calorie Row (14 for the men, 12 for the ladies)
This workout proved to be quite the lung burner (and calorie burner I might add) as the transition from the DBs to the row didn't provide much of a recovery and if you went out too hard on the rower, you realized it by the end of the 2nd round!
How did each of our athletes rank? Check out the full breakdown below.
The top 3 athletes in each category earned 3 pts each for their team, each athlete earns 1 pt for their team by doing the workout and there are 5 weekly points available for the team that stands out for showing team spirit. For week 1, all our teams really stepped up to the plate in the team spirit category. Every team had custom team shirts made, took a lot of great pics, cheered for each other and showed up en masse so we're awarding every team 5 points in the spirit category this week... great job everyone! So... drum roll... here's the standings after week 1:
34 pts- Swoldiers
31 pts- Purple Reign
30 pts- Kippin' It Real
We've got a tight race and with 4 weeks left, ANYTHING could happen!
