CrossFit Open 18.4 Results

Did these 5 weeks pass by quickly or what!? It always does and there's been a tremendous amount of

excitement around the gym on Fridays and Mondays as people assemble to watch, do and redo these challenging workouts. The tag line for the Open has always been "Prove your Fitness" and I believe each of you has had an opportunity to see your strengths and your weaknesses and we hope you've found some new encouragement and some new motivation to hone your skills over the next year.

TODAY, Thursday, 3.23.18 we'll have an 18.5 reveal party at the box! Purple Reign has graciously offered to host the watch party by bringing in some grub and they are organizing some fun for everyone! If you haven't heard yet, Dave Castro is putting a spin on 18.5 this year and YOU get a chance to vote on your fate!

Today at 5 PM CT, March 22, Castro will announce three workout options for 18.5 on Facebook Live (link HERE). The CrossFit community will then have two hours to vote online for which workout we will all have to perform in Week 5. At 7 PM CT tonight, Castro will announce the winning workout during the live broadcast and the Dottirs—Annie Thorisdottir, Katrin Davidsdottir and Sara Sigmundsdottir—will go head-to-head on 18.5 from CrossFit Reykjavík in Iceland and we'll watch the throw down in the gym!

Our side contest for the 18.5 announcement:

6:45 PM- 18.5 guessing game & food (boneless wings and pizza). Guess which WOD will be repeated from the 3 options available. You must be present to enter and you must have your vote submitted before the live announcement at 7 PM! Everyone that guesses correctly will be eligible for a FREE jump rope donated by the box! Winner will be determined by how many unbroken singles can you do (hence the reason you must be present to win). Jump off will be immediately following the live announcement AAAAAND.... stay posted... we MAY run a heat or two of 18.5 immediately after the jump off. See y'all in the box!

What's the CrossFit Open?

The CrossFit Open is a worldwide, online CrossFit competition hosted by CrossFit Headquarters and it's designed as the first test to entry for the annual CrossFit Games, the Super Bowl of CrossFit competitions that's held each summer in Carson, California. In 2017 over 300,000 people participated in the online competition! Over 5 weeks, CrossFit HQ announces a mystery workout each Thursday and participants have until Monday at close of business to complete the workout. We follow the 5 weeks of workouts alongside HQ by doing an in-house Intramural Open whereas athletes are drafted onto teams to compete against one another, earning team points by placing in the top 3 for their division, performing the workout each week and by coming together to show team spirit and good sportsmanship.

I'd like to once again thank our Gold level sponsor, Dr. Ross Leago at Fairway Chiropractic in Alvin for his generous sponsorship. Just before the Open I sat down for lunch with Dr. Leago at Gordon St. Tavern to get to know the man and I was pleased to hear how much his passion for helping people aligned with what we do daily in our CrossFit gym. There's a level of knowledge and desire to help people that rivals our own so I was very happy to invite Fairway Chiropractic to be one of our sponsors. If I didn't believe in their service, I wouldn't have made the offer.

Dr. Leago has been serving the Alvin community since April of 2007 and his staff is one of the friendliest you'll find at any business. I always enjoy walking through their doors so if you're in need of Chiropractic services, I HIGHLY recommend them.. oh, and those massage chairs while you wait! Visit them online at or call 281-331-5000 to schedule an appointment today! Whether you have an injury, need routine maintenance or even need care for your child, their great staff can help diagnose and treat your symptoms! If you can't find an open appointment online, please call their office and they'll do everything they can to fit you in!

Open workout 18.4 (as in 2018, workout #4) was a test of two of the high level gymnastics skills we do in CrossFit, the Hand Stand Push Up (HSPU) and the hand stand walk. We saw just how challenging this workout was as no one in our gym was able to get far enough during the 9 minute time cap to even attempt the hand stand walks. The scaled and super scaled divisions saw these movements substituted with hand-release push ups and bear crawls so it was a great challenge even for those of us that haven't yet progressed to those higher level skills... and that's one of the great things about CrossFit. We have a modification for every skill level so everyone can participate! I think we've all realized a new-found respect for CrossFit movement standards after this workout.

How did each of our athletes rank? Check out the full breakdown below. Names are color-coordinated to their team colors... and boy there's a lot of purple on the podium this week!

We saw some new people on the podium (1st-3rd) this week so congrats to Nicholas (teen Rx), Pat & Shelly (Womens Rx), David (Mens Scaled) and Lisa & Lynda in the Masters Scaled/ SS division, all first time podium finishers this year. It just goes to show that everyone has their strengths and weaknesses. I'd like to point out that Lynda has only been doing CrossFit for about 7 weeks and was nervous to even join an Open team which at the time, was around her 3rd week of doing CrossFit so big ups to her for accepting the invitation from the great ladies in the #430Crew class. It's going to be fun to see what she can do this time next year!

Weekly Team Standings:

1st - 32 pts - Purple Reign (for the 2nd week in a row)- This team is mounting a strong comeback after a slow start!

2nd - 26 pts - Kippin' It Real

3rd 25 pts - Swoldiers

* there was no winner of the Spirit of the Games award this week. It's hard to top the creativity each week so we're adding our own wrinkle for 18.5. The winner of the Spirit of the Games award this week will be the team who posts the best action pics on social media, either Facebook or Instagram! All pics should use the #alvincrossfit and #youruniqueteamhashtag so we can find the photos! You can take pics of your teammates or of other team members... we just want everyone to have some great shots to look back on cause it's been a blast seeing last years photos pop up on our timelines this year! Let's see who's got the photographer's eye! Those 5 points could be the difference in the final standings!

Overall Standings Going into 18.5:

133 pts- Kippin' It Real

128 pts- Purple Reign

117 pts- Swoldiers

Who will reign supreme for the overall title? Only time will tell.....

Coach Fergs
