CrossFit Open 18.5 Results
Congratulations... you just completed the CrossFit Open! The workouts were great this year. Much more

inclusive than previous years I thought. The mods for different skill levels were pretty good too so it was fun to have a division where everyone could compete. I also loved the Scaled Plus division we created especially for our "tweener" athletes and it proved to be quite competitive. We saw several people step up and try a more challenging workout. Overall, everyone seemed to really enjoyed the workouts and a very large percentage of y'all did the workouts twice each week, improving upon your first score.
While the aim of daily CrossFit classes prepares you for what CrossFit HQ refers to as GPP (General Physical Preparedness), the Open is a great test for fleshing out your weaknesses. Everyone should be able to walk away with concrete things they need to work on and we want you to know that our team of coaches are here to help you over and above the GPP time we spend on skills in our daily classes. Our Personal Training services are available to all members (and to the public) and we even have 30 minute skill sessions if you need just a little 1:1 tweak time. You can always book with a coach of your choice and we'll help you define and crush your goals. Looking for a pull-up training routine? No problem. Need help with your barbell lifts or want to add a strength component to your routine? We've got you covered. Is your mobility holding you back? We can design a routine for that too so when you're ready to get on a plan to take your game to the next level, we're here to help!
ANNOUNCEMENT
We WILL have an Open After Party, most likely at the gym within the next couple of weeks! Each year we aim to improve the Open Comp and we'll be improving the after party too! The awesome ladies from Purple Reign are spearheading the event and if you were there last year, you'll remember the fun games. We'll be having food, either pot luck, something brought in or a combo. We've also got some other fun things lined up that you won't want to miss so keep an eye out for details and an invite from our private FB group page.
What's the CrossFit Open?
The CrossFit Open is a worldwide, online CrossFit competition hosted by CrossFit Headquarters and it's designed as the first test to entry for the annual CrossFit Games, the Super Bowl of CrossFit competitions that's held each summer in Carson, California. In 2017 over 300,000 people participated in the online competition! Over 5 weeks, CrossFit HQ announces a mystery workout each Thursday and participants have until Monday at close of business to complete the workout. We follow the 5 weeks of workouts alongside HQ by doing an in-house Intramural Open whereas athletes are drafted onto teams to compete against one another, earning team points by placing in the top 3 for their division, performing the workout each week and by coming together to show team spirit and good sportsmanship.
I'd like to once again thank our Gold level sponsor, Dr. Ross Leago at Fairway Chiropractic in Alvin for his generous sponsorship. Our daily routines can reek havoc on our bodies (sit at work anyone?) so Chiro services aren't just for athletes, they're for the everyday Joe!
Just before the Open I sat down for lunch with Dr. Leago at Gordon St. Tavern to get to know the man and I was pleased to hear how much his passion for helping people aligned with what we do daily in our CrossFit gym. There's a level of knowledge and desire to help people that rivals our own so I was very happy to invite Fairway Chiropractic to be one of our sponsors. If I didn't believe in their service, I wouldn't have made the offer.

Dr. Leago has been serving the Alvin community since April of 2007 and his staff is one of the friendliest you'll find at any business. I always enjoy walking through their doors so if you're in need of Chiropractic services, I HIGHLY recommend them.. oh, and those massage chairs while you wait! Visit them online at http://www.myfairwaychiropractic.com/ or call 281-331-5000 to schedule an appointment today! Whether you have an injury, need routine maintenance or even need care for your child, their great staff can help diagnose and treat your symptoms! If you can't find an open appointment online, please call their office and they'll do everything they can to fit you in!
Open workout 18.5 (as in 2018, workout #5) was a test on a variation of a popular CrossFit Benchmark workout, Fran. The workout consisted of increasing reps of thrusters and chest to bar pull-ups. This is a classic "push/ pull" combo and with the massive range of motion required in the thruster and the big energy requirements for the pull-up, this combo will test your cardio like nothing else. I think everyone that did the workout Monday is still recovering!
How did each of our athletes rank? Check out the full breakdown below. Names are color-coordinated to their team colors! We saw some new people on the podium (1st-3rd) again this week so congrats to Tyler (Scaled Plus) and Tammy (Super Scaled), both first time podium finishers this year! Tammy is another rookie CrossFitter that has only been doing CrossFit for about 8 weeks but she shows up consistently, works hard on her technique and has a real desire to get better, as evidenced by how hard she is on herself. Sometimes we're our own worst critic but that usually just leads to bigger and better things! Tyler has been steadily putting in great work and his engine has grown by a few CCs in the last year. It'll be exciting to see where he lands next year!

Weekly Team Standings:
1st - 38 pts - Kippin' It Real
2nd - 37 pts - Purple Reign (Winners of the Spirit of the Games award this week by posting 3 great action pics of their team!)
3rd 28 pts - Swoldiers
Final Standings:
171 pts- Kippin' It Real, with a NARROW win over the underdog Purple Reign.
165 pts- Purple Reign
145 pts- Swoldiers
Our goal with the Open each year is for our athletes to have fun in a competitive environment, discover areas of strengths and weaknesses and to encourage each other along the way... and it never disappoints! I'm super proud of all the great things y'all accomplished and I couldn't be more pleased with the participation. We once again had about 98% of the gym sign up so thank you all for participating and thanks for help judging all our athletes so everyone could get a chance to put up a good score. See ya next year!
